Thought I had a thread on this project but maybe not. I always loved the tamiya Sand Scorchers but they were out of my price range. So I came up with the idea to make a reasonable facsimile of one using cheap and readily available parts. I started with Parma baja beetle body, closest cheap solution and pretty close to a scorcher. The chassis is homemade from aluminum to combine the rear axle from a tamiya TA02 and the front suspension from a 1/16 tamtech GB02 which uses trailing arm suspension, just like the scorcher. Tired are scale BFG MT's that come on a few Tamiya kits, fronts narrowed. That's pretty much it. It'll have LED headlights and maybe some tube work and interior. I got the first color of paint on today and if weather permits will finish tomorrow.

That's looking awesome. Very nice work so far. You're gonna have to add a driver figure to this thing though. :cheese

I'd like to eventually. Now I'm just trying to get it finished for the baja build-off on scale4x4.com. Not that I'll win since there are actual og sand scorchers as my competition.

Finished the paint, had some bleed through in a couple spots though. I'm looking for some pinstriping to try and cover it up, and break up the paint line down the middle. I have part of the internal body mounts made and will make some for the sides as well. Velcro will be used on them. After that all I really need to do is add stickers and glue the headlight buckets into the body. As far as the rolling chassis goes, the rims are all that needs modified and then add electronics. I should have it running in time for the contest. I'll add bumpers and a driver/interior later.

Got some more work done on this. Found some silver/transparent pinstriping to break up the paint line. Not sure if I like the maltese crosses though. Made a belly pan that I can velcro mount the body from the sides to. And I gooped the LED light buckets into the headlight holes, which I think looks pretty good. Need to wire them up before a lights-out shot.

Took some pics today and need to pick one for the contest. I like the one with the church in the background on mulch I think.
